Understanding The Reasons For Miscarriage

Pregnancy is one of the most challenging yet most fulfilling time of your life. But sometimes, it comes to an end and most women are left dumbfounded as to what happened and why it happened to them. For sure, their biggest question is Why?

Well, we are here to discover the possible answers to this question. To help you out, here are some of the possible reasons for miscarriage:

1.Excessive Caffeine Intake

According to a study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, pregnant women who consumed more than 200 mg of caffeine per day have double risk of miscarriage.

The cause still remains unknown but some people think that since the caffeine can cross placenta, it can have a negative effect on the developing cells of the baby.

2.Lifestyle factors (Alcohol, Cigarette and Drug Use)

Just like caffeine, nicotine and alcohol crosses the placenta and these substances interfere with the blood supply of the fetus, affecting its growth and development. If you wish to prevent miscarriage, it is advised that you avoid drinking more than two glasses of alcoholic beverage or maybe you should avoid drinking at all.

3.Bacterial Infections

Our reproductive tracts contain normal flora of microorganisms. But there are certain bacteria that can increase our risk of miscarriage. These include Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis. These cause infections which can cause inflammation to the endometrium, making it difficult for the embryo to fully develop.

4.Hormonal Imbalances

During pregnancy, the body will have some problem producing the hormone, progesterone which can create a hormonal imbalance. This hormone is vital in helping the placenta to take hold of the fetus and for the uterine lining to support it. Taking oral progesterone can help in reducing the risk for miscarriage.

5.Chronic medical Conditions

Chronic diseases, like diabetes, lupus, thyroid diseases and lupus, have the tendency to restrict blood flow to the uterus, Since the fetus needs enough oxygen to survive, these conditions can increase the risk for miscarriage. It is important that you talk with your health care provider so you can manage these diseases properly before and during the pregnancy.

6.Chromosomal defect

This is the most common reason for a miscarriage. There are some times when the set of chromosomes from the sperm and the egg do not line up in time for conception. But this does not necessarily mean that there’s something wrong with the mother or the father. The miscarriage that is brought about by this problem usually takes place during the first or second trimester.

7.Physical complications

These are the least common cause of miscarriage. Some of the complications that you experience physically include cervical incompetency, septum, and polyps. The miscarriage brought about by physical complications usually, occur during the second and third trimester.
